Lerwick Junior Up Helly Aa

Lerwick's Junior Up Helly Aa was first established in 1956 and precedes the main Lerwick Up Helly Aa procession. In the same vein, junior guizers parade through the town streets with burning torches before assembling in the King George V Park to burn the "peerie galley" (a small replica Viking longship). The Junior Jarl Squad, which is made up of secondary school pupils, gets involved in the day's activities too, visiting schools, care homes and the Mareel Arts Centre.
