Island hopping by inter-island ferry is an essential part of many visitors’ Shetland experience.

Ferries run between Shetland Mainland and the islands of Bressay, Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsay, Foula, Fair Isle, Whalsay, Skerries and Papa Stour. Ferries run frequently and you can travel to the islands as a foot passenger and to many of them with your own vehicle.

For the latest ferry timetables see the Shetland Travel Information website, where you can search for ferries by your desired route and date of travel. Please note that the timetables show departure times only. For ferry fares, see the Shetland Islands Council website. Blue Badge holders travel free on all ferry services.

Booking for all ferries is advisable (except the Bressay ferry which cannot be booked). Vehicles greater than 5.5 metres in length must be booked through the Booking Office. Loading of booked and un-booked vehicles commences not less than 5 minutes before the advertised sailing time.

All ferries have toilets onboard but not all of them are accessible toilets. The ferries are pet-friendly but animals must be kept under control and remain within a vehicle or on the car deck. There are unmanned waiting rooms at most ferry terminals but no left luggage facilities.
