Shetland has 1,700 miles of coastline with beaches ranging from wild and rocky to calm and sandy—each with its own character, scenery, and geology. Here are a few highlights: 📍 Sands of Breckon – a regular award-winning beach and Shetland’s largest area of blown shell-sand, shaped by rising seas and Ice Age glacial deposits. Features dunes, wildflower-rich machair, and traces of ancient bedrock 📸 @manuelthesilence 📍 Roesand (Zoar) – A hidden beach in the North Mainland, only visible after a short walk to the cliffs. Offers incredible views and a rope descent for the most adventurous. Quiet, remote, and worth the trek. 📍 Rerwick Beach (near Bigton) – A quiet, south-facing beach known for seals basking on the sand. Best viewed from the road above to avoid disturbance. 📍 Levenwick Beach – A family favourite with gentle sands, rock pools, and safe paddling. Dog-friendly and north-facing, it opens out to the North Sea. 📍 Bain’s Beach – A tucked-away gem in central Lerwick, surrounded by historic lodberries and made famous by the Shetland TV series. Popular with sea swimmers, this spot also has deep ties to the town’s maritime and trading past. 📍 St Ninian’s Isle tombolo – A striking sand causeway linking to the historic St Ninian’s Isle. Great for a walk any time of year, it’s also the site of an important archaeological site, where Pictish treasure was discovered in a wooden box during excavations of a medieval church in the late 1950s. Head to our link in bio to discover more. #promoteshetland #shetland #visitshetland #shetlandislands #shetlandisles #inspiredbyshetland #shetlandtruenorth
