The world famous Lerwick Up Helly Aa is held on the last Tuesday in January every year, but did you know there are 11 more annual fire festivals throughout Shetland?
From January to mid-March it is Up Helly Aa - or fire festival - season in Shetland. There are 12 in total. The Lerwick Up Helly Aa attracts a global audience, but smaller festivals are also held in communities across the isles, including in Unst in the north, Bressay in the east, and throughout the Shetland mainland. Each festival has its own unique character and traditions.
