This sound walk invites you to explore Stenness Beach as it once was - an important fishing station until the late 19th century.

The fishing station was a unique, yet elusive, part of Shetland’s heritage. The soundscape encourages you to re-imagine the beach as a hive of activity, where communities of fishermen and traders made temporary homes over the summer months.

Using 21st century GPS technology, a nineteenth-century sound world has been recreated on the stony beach. Twenty fragments of sounds and voices relating to the ‘haaf’ fishing have been placed on the beach and surrounding area, in audio pools, invisible to the naked eye.

To access the audio guide, you must download the app before going to Stenness. You need a mobile device and preferably, headphones or earbuds. Download the app ‘SatsymphQR’, from the App Store or GooglePlay. You can find more information with full instructions by clicking here
