Two of Shetland's most beautiful beaches are also its most inaccessible: Uyea and Da Lang Ayre. Da Lang Ayre can be reached only be sea or by a long walk either over the top of Ronas Hill, Shetland’s highest peak, or along its flank.
Once you get there, it offers a spectacular mile-and-a-half of red shingle, backed with cliffs. There are caves, infinite amounts of beachcombing to be enjoyed and, offshore, the stacks of the Cleiver and the Hog.
If you do choose to walk to Da Lang Ayre, please proceed with caution; it's a steep and challenging walk. As writer and broadcaster Tom Morton, writer said in his blog Wilderness Walks to Best Beaches: "You really don’t want to be walking 'da banks' of the Lang Ayre any time between October and February, and you most certainly don’t want to be camping."
