Unfortunately at around 2pm on Saturday 8th June the Shetland Puffincam witnessed the harsh reality of watching nature up close and personal.
The parent, probably realising the egg had failed, broke the egg and then tried to remove it from the nest. We also witnessed strange behaviour, similar to last year, when the nest was occupied by two puffins bringing in nesting material again. We are not sure if this is the original pair however after a few hours the nest was empty again and continues to looks like its been abandoned.
We will now focus our cameras on the other burrows around the area in the hope that we capture the pufflings leaving around the beginning of August. Although another sad end we are all learning so much more about our favourite seabirds and they do appear to be struggling again this year.
