  • Get involved in Shetland nature events this summer
By Promote ShetlandJune 10th 2022

One of Shetland's greatest assets is its wonderful nature and wildlife. For your chance to get up close with the natural wonders of Shetland this summer, check out the exciting programme of nature events...

From exploring the fascinating world of pollinators at the Lerwick Flower Park and discovering magical moths at the Crofthouse Museum to visiting the woodland at Kergord for leaf printing, bug hotels, mud cakes, cooking outdoors and more, there's an action-packed programme of family-friendly nature events taking place in Shetland this summer.

The Shetland Amenity Trust in partnership with the Shetland Wildlife Community Group has put together the events to celebrate the islands' fantastic nature, wildlife and landscape, recognising its status as a UNESCO Global Geopark. There are a range of outdoor activities to choose from including guided walks with experts, wild flower and woodland walks and wildlife drop-ins covering autumn bird migration, cetacean spotting and rock pooling.

“Shetland really comes to life in the summer and we are keen to help people to get out there and enjoy it," says Rory Tallack, the Amenity Trust's natural heritage officer. "The schedule has been designed to appeal to children and families as well as seasoned wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts."

The summer programme of events replaces the week-long Shetland Nature Festival, last held in 2019.

"We hope that this new format will enable more people to get involved and allow us to explore and share more of what Shetland has to offer during the summer months," says Rory.

“We will also be attending some of Shetland’s agricultural shows, where people can drop by for a chat, meet our wildlife and nature experts and find out more about the work we do.”
