Shetland has a growing and very active craft community and local admirers of the work of glass artist Cheryl Jamieson recently had the chance to find out how she makes her beautiful pieces.
An event at the Bonhoga Gallery, in Weisdale, allowed members of the public to meet Cheryl, who runs Glansin Glass, and explore some of the processes and techniques behind her practice. The event was run as part of Craft Scotland’s ‘Meet Your Maker’ scheme, now in its third year, which invites people to come along to galleries and meet craft makers, observe them at work and ask questions.
Cheryl was born and brought up in Unst, the most northerly of the Shetland Islands, where she now runs a busy glass studio and retail outlet. She designs and hand makes unique kiln formed glassware, including jewellery, tableware and sculptural pieces. She feels that her work reflects the environment, which is rich in heritage, archaeology and geology.
Angela Smith, of Shetland Arts, said: “We had an overwhelmingly positive response to the event. Cheryl Jamiesons’ glasswork is diverse, rich with detail and colour, and very beautiful.” More events are in the pipeline.
