After 25 years of campaigning, the people of Fair Isle have, at last, been give the Demonstration and Research Marine Protected Area that they wanted. The designation was confirmed on 26 October by Roseanna Cunningham, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform
The news comes on the back of decades of community effort, campaigning for improved protection for Fair Isle’s waters. Fair Isle is famed for its migratory bird populations and attracts visitors from all over the world. The remotest permanently inhabited island in Britain, it’s around 40km from the nearest land.
