If you’re looking for a way to get involved in the community in Shetland, one thing you might consider is becoming a member of your local community council.

There are 18 community councils spread throughout Shetland. These are democratically elected bodies which meet to discuss and decide on issues affecting their area - be it for funding allocations or discussions between other groups and institutions, such as the emergency services or local council, they are there represent the views of their community.

Shetland prides itself on outstanding community involvement, and community councils play an important part in local democracy. Every 4 years a Community Council elects new members, and this October elections are open once again.

To become a community councillor you must be over 18 years of age and on the electoral roll for that area.
